UC CEAS Mechanical Engineering Technology
Employer Profile: FZJ

Forschungszentrum Jülich (FZJ)
Semester of Participation: Spring and Summer, 2025
Location: Jülich, North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany
Company Overview
Forschungszentrum Jülich is one of Europe’s largest research centers, founded in 1956. Originally focused on nuclear energy, it now supports interdisciplinary research in areas such as energy, environment, information technology, and neuroscience. It is part of the Helmholtz Association and employs over 7,000 people from around the world. The campus is located just outside the town of Jülich and includes modern labs, office buildings, computing centers, and green spaces.
Department / Division
Department: Electrochemical Process Engineering (IET-4)
IET-4 focuses on developing technologies that turn electricity into fuel. Their work helps improve devices like fuel cells and electrolyzers, which are used in cars and power systems. By combining basic science with real-world applications, IET-4 helps bring these energy solutions closer to everyday use.
Position & Responsibilities
Role: Research Intern
As an intern, I worked on tasks such as:
-
Independently conducted and evaluated aerosol experiments using various particle measurement devices and software.
-
Performed functional verification and measurement series for gas analysis and flow measurement systems.
-
Prepared experimental materials in an on-site workshop, including mechanical processing, piping installation, and electrical cabling.
-
Documented and presented a comprehensive report on work performed, summarizing key findings and recommendations for future research.
Day-to-day work included research support, data analysis, team meetings, and occasional presentations. I worked closely with mentors and had opportunities to attend campus events and lectures.

Workplace Culture
FZJ has a formal but welcoming environment. Teams are collaborative, and communication is often in English due to the international staff. The atmosphere is focused but balanced, with regular breaks and respect for work-life boundaries.
Work hours typically begin around 8:00 AM and end by 4:00 PM but can be quite flexible depending on the department. The campus includes a cafeteria, bike paths, and walking areas, supporting a healthy daily routine.
Germany vs. USA: Workplace Comparison
-
Work Schedule: German workplaces tend to have earlier hours and discourage overtime. U.S. offices may have more flexible but longer days.
-
Structure: FZJ follows a clear hierarchy, though teamwork is encouraged. U.S. workplaces are often more informal and flexible in roles.
-
Communication: Communication in Germany is direct and formal; in the U.S., it’s more casual and indirect.
-
Intern Experience: Interns at FZJ are given meaningful, hands-on tasks and integrated into research teams, similar to many U.S. STEM internships.
