Upon returning from my international experience, I’m able to recognize many of the cultural similarities and differences between Germany and the U.S. A few that stood out immediately were lifestyle-related, especially the emphasis Germans place on punctuality and structure. Interestingly, while being on time was highly valued socially and professionally, the national train operator, Deutsche Bahn, often experienced delays and cancellations, which created an ironic contrast. Another key difference I observed was the strong focus on health and fitness. Biking to work was not only common but encouraged, and the walkable nature of German cities made physical activity a natural part of daily life.

Culturally, I also noticed a more direct communication style in Germany, which at first felt abrupt, but eventually became something I appreciated for its clarity and honesty. On a personal level, this experience has significantly expanded my worldview and helped me grow in unexpected ways. My communication skills have improved greatly, especially in situations where I don’t share a common background with someone. I feel more comfortable navigating unfamiliar social settings, and I’ve become more adaptable and open-minded. Overall, my time abroad has strengthened my cross-cultural competency and given me a deeper appreciation for both the diversity and interconnectedness of global cultures.
